Hello everybody!
Can’t believe it is November! I hope you all have had a productive fall and are ready for winter.
This is a last call for nominations for this years election for RosExec. As it stands, we have a total of seven people (five from the US, and two of our international liaisons).
I have received five nominations for US people and two for international Liaisons. I am in the process of contacting them and making sure they are still interested in running. Are there any other arms we can twist to get a larger pool? If so, could you let me know and I will contact them.
I will have voting open mid november, in time for this years RosEXEC meeting in January.

Hello everyone,
We currently have several options for pre- and post-conference tours for RGC7. Descriptions for the tours can be found at http://www.rosaceae.org/conferences/rgc7/tours. We are trying to determine if there is enough interest for further planning for these pre- and post-tours in order to provide those interested with the cost for the tours.
We have heard from a few people, but would like to know from more attendees which pre- and post-tours are of the most interest. By letting us know which tours you are interested in now, you will not be obligated to register for the tour. We are only gauging interest to see if there will be enough people to make these tours cost-effective.
Please email which tour options you might be interested in to rgc7(a)rosacae.org<mailto:rgc7@rosacae.org> by October 31st.
Thank you,

Hello everybody!
I hope you all had a wonderful and productive summer and are all ready for the fall to start!
It is now time to start thinking about RosExec elections for the upcoming year.
Five US people will be rotating off at the end of this year (Kate Evans, Jay Norelli, Mercey Olmstead, Janet Slovin, and Vance Whitaker).
Now, looking at the numbers, we will have the following make up next year with those left:
Inst: Univ 6, Gvt 4, Ind 2
Region: South 2, West 6, East 4
So we really need people from industry and/or the South to help bolster representation.
We will be looking for nominations over the next few weeks. If you know of someone who may be interested in serving on RosExec, please have them contact me and I can help them, or send me their information and I can contact them. We will need a short Bio from them.
I have a timeline in place as follows:
Nominations to me By Oct 15, 2013
Voting will be carried out Between Nov 1-15, 2013
Secretary nominations and Election Early December
Announcement of Results at PAG
Once again, hope you are looking forward to your new semesters and look forward to catching up with you soon!

Dear Colleagues:
The draft genome assemblies of double haploid apple (Malus x domestica cv. "Golden Delicious"), double haploid pear (Pyrus communis cv "Doyenne du Comice"), sweet cherry (Prunus avium cv "Stella") and almond (Pyrus amygdalus - 2 selections S3067 and Lauranne) are being made available to the research community prior to publication via our Genome Portal http://genomicsdata.wsu.edu/public_access/index.php
The data may be downloaded and used by those who agree to the terms of release. The information should not be further re-distributed or publicly released. If you wish for someone in your laboratory to use the data, they must all read and agree to the access terms as defined on the portal. Please access the terms of agreement and set up a new account at http://genomicsdata.wsu.edu/public_access/index.php?r=site/newaccount
We welcome community members to collaborate in the ongoing efforts on genome analysis and contribute to the manuscripts under preparation. You can indicate your areas of interest on the new account sign up page. It is expected that scientists who access these data, will not trespass on the consortia members' ongoing efforts to analyze and publish a whole genome analysis of the afore-listed genomes. Further anyone who accesses these data will agree not to publish whole-genome or whole chromosome scale analyses of the afore-listed genomes, analyses of gene families/genome structures/ repetitive sequences, comparative analyses with other organisms including other published plant genomes, or other analyses such that they encroach and limit our opportunity to publish the findings of our work.
We would like to gratefully acknowledge the support received from our respective Universities, Institutions, Federal, State and Commodity funding sources that made this work possible. Please see the attached document for details regarding consortia members and funding support.
On behalf of DH Apple, Comice Pear, Sweet Cherry and Almond Genome project consortia,

Host jump genetics- the mechanisms of pathogen adaptation in Pseudomonas
Supervisors- Dr Robert W. Jackson (Reading), Dr Richard Harrison and Dr Laura Lewis (East Malling Research)
The mechanism by which pathogens cross species barriers to infect a new host is poorly understood, making the movements of host-jumping pathogens extremely unpredictable. The project offered here will focus on Pseudomonas syringae pathovars, which have made several known host-jumps across economically important crops, including wheat, beans, plum and cherry.
The aims of this project are as follows:
1. To sequence the genomes of several Pseudomonas syringae pathovars to assess within and between pathovar diversification in relation to host jump events.
2. To address the hypothesis of whether effectors dictate host specificity and to assess their centrality to host jumping.
3. To initiate a host jump within the laboratory setting and in so doing identify potential causes of host jumping at the molecular level.
4. To link pathogen effectors to resistance relationships in planta to assess whether host-jumping to a new host is modulated by host resistance in the existing host.
The project will use next generation sequencing to sequence the genomes of several pathovars of the plant pathogenic species, and will employ comparative genomics to assess the relationship between effector genes, which are required for virulence, and host jumping events. Molecular techniques will be used to recreate host jumps within the laboratory, which will inform us of the driving forces that bring about host jumps, enabling better predictions of which strains are likely to host jump, and which hosts are they likely to jump to. The student will receive training in genomics and genetics, bioinformatics, plant-microbe interactions, and evolution. The supervisory team are starting a new strategic partnership between Reading and East Malling drawing upon resources in both institutions. The team will collaborate with key scientists in each institute; for example, Dr Louise Johnson will provide valuable advice for the evolutionary experiments.

Dear Sir/Madam,
In 2013, East Malling Research will be celebrating 100 years of plant science at this world-famous research institute - science that has shaped the way we understand and can manipulate plants to produce high value, nutritious fruit crops across the globe.
To mark this Centenary, East Malling Research is working closely with colleagues at the Association of Applied Biologists (AAB) to organise a two-day international conference on 16-17 April 2013. Entitled, 'Fruit and Roots: A Celebration and Forward Look', this event has confirmed key-note speakers from New Zealand and the United States, as well as the UK.
It is with pleasure that I attach a pdf of the first announcement and call for papers. We very much hope that you can circulate or inform Members of the Rosaceae group some of whom we hope will be able to participate in this event through presenting a paper/poster or attending the conference as a delegate.
To mark this very special year for East Malling Research, we will be organising a number of other events and activities, and I very much hope that we can look forward to welcoming your Members here during 2013.
With kind regards

Dear Rosaceae Community,
The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, September 21st. We have 5 committee positions to fill and need 2 new international liaisons. We encourage anyone who has not participated before to consider serving on RosEXEC. By serving on RosEXEC you can help our research community remain competitive and it will provide you with excellent opportunities for building research collaborations. Candidates are welcome to nominate themselves. Please send nomination materials to Chris.dardick(a)ars.usd.gov<mailto:Chris.dardick@ars.usd.gov>. See attached for additional details.

The mission of the RosEXEC is to:
* Serve as a communication and coordination focal point for the US Rosaceae genomics, genetics and breeding community.
* Define and promote research priorities based on input from the industry and research community.
* Coordinate educational efforts from the research community to the industry and the public.

In Fall, 2012 five new RosEXEC members will be elected to a 3 year term starting January, 2013. All members of the Rosaceae community are invited to nominate candidates for election. Nomination of candidates who have not previously served on the RosEXEC including younger scientists and new faculty are encouraged. Industry representation is currently lacking and candidates from industry are also strongly encouraged. Members rotating off RosEXEC in January 2012 are not eligible for nomination (see list above). Members who will continue to serve in 2013 include, David Byrne, Thomas Chao, Bob Curtis, Sook Jung, Cameron Peace, Kate Evans, Mercy Olmstead, Janet Slovin, JD Swanson, Vance Whitaker, Jay Norelli, and Chris Dardick- so no need to nominate them as they will already be serving. Nominations should be sent to Chris Dardick (chris.dardick(a)ars.usda.gov<mailto:chris.dardick@ars.usda.gov>), Chair of the RosEXEC membership committee by September 15, 2011. Nominees will then be contacted by the membership committee and asked to provide a CV or bio, and a brief vision statement. The community wide election will be held in October.
